Social Inequality Worksheet

On a separate Word document, citing one to three scholarly sources from the GCU library, answer the following prompts:
Explain how social inequality, on a micro and macro level, perpetuates the social problem you selected (150-200 words).
Social inequality is viewed as a barrier to an individual’s growth and development. It hinders opportunities amongst the less privileged people hence limiting their success. On the macro level, when social inequality occurs, opportunities such as work opportunities are limited (Thompson & Dahling, 2019). In the long run, this results in unemployment, which impacts economic growth as more individuals are jobless, increasing poverty. When poverty levels are high, more people rely on the government for assistance to attain necessities since they cannot afford to cater to needs such as food, education, and housing.
On the other hand, on the micro-level social inequality leads to an increment in poverty; hence more people engage in crime. This happens mostly amongst youths who look for ways to survive in society due to the high unemployment rate. This also increases bullying, poor education performances, low-income family planning, increases in diseases such as STDs, and a reduction in the workforce, which accelerates the poverty rate in society.
Explain how social inequality is influenced by individual and institutional discrimination (150-200 words).
Inequality, discrimination, and poverty can be a handle in accelerating poverty levels in society. Discrimination by institutions and individuals can negatively influence social inequality. Social inequality s impacted by a person’s discrimination when stereotyping occurs due to ethnicity/race and hate crimes. For example, there have been cases where people have failed to enjoy equality in the workplace because their race or ethnicity is looked down upon. This means that despite being well trained and qualified, they are not fit for a position. This further alleviates the level of poverty in society as such marginalized groups do not get good pay for their tasks (“Breaking the poverty trap,” 2020).
In most cases, socially marginalized people in society encounter discriminatory practices. Institutional discrimination influences social inequality, and in some cases, justice dies not prevail for hate crimes. The culprits do not face the law, making them continue committing the same offenses as they know that they can quickly get away with the crimes.

The social security act (1935) is one of the integral solutions to the issue of social inequality. This act was established to assist the unemployed and elderly Americans to receive equal amenities in society. The act also assorted socially disadvantaged Americans through public welfare, and this was mainly meant to help those who were blind, disabled, kids with special needs, and dependent kids (Moynihan, 2019). Such groups had been ignored for a long time in society, and it was vital to ensure that their needs were also looked into and that their grievances were considered. The public works administration is one historical solution comparable to the social security act. The National Industrial Recovery Act established public works administration in 1933 on June 16. It entailed budgeting billion dollars to be used to construct public works to help offer employment, improve public welfare, revive the American industry, and stabilize purchasing power. The social security act and the public works administration can thus be termed as the two comparable solutions as they focused on helping Americans through public welfare.
