As time progresses, so does the concept of an advanced nurse practitioner, which has kept changing. The change depends upon the understanding of any registered nurse’s ordinary scope of practice. The development over the years has formed a standard scope for practicing to respond to the ever-changing social and healthcare needs of a population. The change in scope of practice for advanced nurse practitioners is also due to the dynamics in the healthcare delivery model (VandeWaa & Dolan, 2020). The changes have led to an acknowledgment that nursing is about to make other changes that may affect their current competencies. This essay focuses on the current roles and responsibilities of an Advanced Nurse Practitioner during prescription.
Several departments define an advanced nurse practitioner’s role in prescription differently. According to the Nursing Midwifery Council and the Department of Health, there are specific roles for an advanced nurse practitioner during prescription (Kaplan & Brown, 2021). Since the role is a hybrid, it should stick to the nursing philosophy of practice, which encompasses a doctor’s traditional skill set. An advanced nurse practitioner is responsible for undertaking a sophisticated and comprehensive mental and physical health assessment on a patient with complex health care needs. Advanced nurse practitioners are in charge of interpreting the results of several medical examinations and investigations for proper diagnosis and a plan to deliver care properly.
They should confidently undertake ethical and evidence-based choices or interventions in cases of complex situations. While deciding, advanced nurse practitioners are also supposed to investigate and manage all risks associated with their choices. According to the Department of health, advanced nurse practitioners should employ different therapies like cognitive behavioral while attending to and prescribing medication to mentally ill patients (Kaplan & Brown, 2021). ANPs prescribe medications and work with patients throughout managing their treatments. They also have a role in planning and providing competent and skilled monitored care to cater to their patient’s social and health needs. ANPs are to refer to their colleagues hence contributing to the NHS appropriately.
As there is an increasing shortage of GPs, advanced nurse practitioners’ roles substitution ensures they remain relevant while allowing patients to receive the required care. Their role here bridges the need for a doctor’s referral associated with delays. The scope of practice for advanced nurse practitioners states that they may assess a patient, diagnose and issue treatment but within the agreement of their employer (The role of advanced nurse practitioners, 2021, January 19). The level of medication complexity they handle is also less than a doctor’s. In the community and primary care, ANPs should develop a good relationship with patients while working in partnership to achieve optimum health.
In conclusion, the ANP’s role in medication prescribing includes providing necessary instructions, information, and warnings to the patient. While prescribing, they incorporate electronic and software medication references to minimize errors (VandeWaa & Dolan, 2020). Before prescribing any medication, they determine a medication’s objection therapy hence selecting an appropriate medication. ANPs need resilience despite their settings and the toughness of their working areas. They should possess the commitment and courage necessary to embark on their journey’s development. Their training should bring immense satisfaction by bettering and meeting their patients’ needs while minimizing unnecessary delays and referrals and medical errors.
