Evidence-based practice in nursing refers to the method by which nursing practitioners across the healthcare professions review and evaluate the most recent and quality research which guides them in care delivery (Ellis, 2019). Care providers incorporate the principles of evidence-based practices in making the best decisions for patient care. Using principles of evidence-based research, nurses use the most available and significant science in their practice which guides them to provide holistic and patient-centered care. In nursing, evidence-based practice has many benefits, both to the patient, the care providers, the healthcare institution, and the community at large. Among the numerous benefits of EBP in nursing include; it provides a platform for nurses to determine an effective course of action, provides care providers with the most recent research to make optimal care decisions, and encourages nurses to offer individualized patient care (Hopp, & Rittenmeyer, 2021).
Evidence-based practice is guided by five principles whose application in nursing practices improves the general clinical practice and patient care. The first principle driving EBP is asking a question. In solving problems, nurses should come up with a detailed and clear questions. Posing a question informs the long-term objective of the practice (Hopp, & Rittenmeyer, 2021). This step is vital in evidence-based practice as its components of the question itself help inform a course of treatment for clinicians to administer. The second step of implementing evidence-based practice is to acquire. In this step, implementers gather the best evidence by researching the best available evidence. This includes material sources supported with evidence and validity as well as verified articles from credible sources. With two options of choosing evidence between a normal report and a highly reviewed and validated study, the validated study is the best option for optimal quality care (Hopp, & Rittenmeyer, 2021).
The third step in EBP implementation is analyzing the evidence gathered and being certain that it is of the best quality. Additionally, this step aids in determining if the evidence gathered matches the needs of the patient cared for and the requirements of the healthcare setting involved. The step requires a detailed analysis based on one’s clinical experience in the nursing practice to choose the evidence to proceed with. The fourth step is the application of the evidence in clinical practice. The step follows a thorough gathering and analysis of information. In applying the evidence, nurses use their clinical experience and strategize the best ways to apply the findings to their clients. The application also observes patient preferences, values, and ethics. The last principle of EBP implementation is the assessment of the results after evidence is applied to clinical practice. The main objective of this principle is to ensure quality improvement in clinical practice is achieved. It answers questions such as the relationship between the initial questions and the results, the effectiveness of the practice to patients, and whether the evidence applies to all patients (Hopp, & Rittenmeyer, 2021).
Effective implementation of evidence-based practices among ADNs requires one to understand the data as well as a consideration of the resources. Several evidence-based practices apply to several organizations while others may not apply to one’s organizations. Implementation should only follow the applicable data. The available organizational resources are a crucial consideration for the effective implementation of EBP. ADNs should also determine patient-centered goals when implementing EBP which they identify based on patient outcomes. Lastly, ADNs should identify their preferences which will inform the adoption of EBP. They should recognize that some preferences may hinder the full implementation of EBP such as those driven by idiosyncratic reasoning (Barwick et al., 2018).
