Organizational Value

Organizational values can be defined as the established standards that govern the behavior of individuals within the organization. Organizational values are infused and put in place in order to ensure the personal values of individuals do not come into clash with those of the organization. Organizational values play a pivotal in the development and growth of the individuals within the organization. To be sure, not every individual is well-equipped with intact personal values beneficial to the organization and this is precisely the point the importance of organizational values becomes pronounced.

In nursing profession, the behavior of nurses and health workers create a long lasting impression at the workplace. Their personal values play a significant role because the nature of their work demands them to be direct with their clients—their patients.(Hultman & Gellermann, 2002)

The organizational values should always be in line with the mission and purpose of the organizational and must compel the individuals to adhere to it. The values strongly articulated within an organization lead to the collective leadership that encourages common norms of behaviors to reinforce organization’s mission and goals.

The nurses at large should acknowledge the fact that their personal values can contribute positively to the developmental and strengthening of organizational values. This, in turn, leads to a healthy relationship with one another. On the top of all, there is nothing more beneficial to the profession of nursing than strong communication techniques. Again, the reason is quite self-evident that nurses cannot carry out their responsibilities in isolation.

Nurses are supposed to be well-versed and enthusiastic about their work ensuring their personal values do not leave a negative impact on the structure of organization or its values. Nurses should be able to assimilate the given organizational values and must try to embellish them by contributing their own personal values that are in harmony with those of the organization.

Though nursing and personal work ethics of a nurse are inextricable as the individual’s personal, moral, social and religious values do contribute to the overall performance and job of a nurse yet professional nursing is based on the idea of fulfilling a role rather than taking individual initiatives. Their behavior is ascertained by the established rules that govern their role.

The nurses can always make the most of their strong communication skills in order to establish a relationship of care and trust the patients. Communication has its therapeutic purpose as well. In an environment where a nurse finds her own personal values being reinforced by those of the organization than her behavior naturally reaps a perfect relationship with the fello staff and patients. On the contrary, if their personal values negate the organization values or the other way round it is most likely to result in conflict frustration for both the staff and patients.

The nurses should exchange and share their personal values and listen to each other’s argument in order to come up with a amicable working environment. Feedback is important in this regard. A nurse should analyze their own personal and organizational values and must seek feedback from her colleagues mainly. Rather, they must also ask for feedback from those who are directly affected by the personal and organizational values. They may include outsiders, patients, observers, and former members of the organization.(Daft, 2009)

Strong communication among nurses serves to enhance their knowledge and awareness about the health issues and problematic areas allowing them to come up with solutions through mutual consultation. As a matter of fact, being a nurse, I closely with the patients who are suffering from different maladies. Some days ago, I came across a rookie nurse who was assigned the task of preparing a spirituality tool to treat her patient. Quite accidently, I noticed that she was pretty much concerned about it. Upon inquiry, she told me about her project admitting that she was faced much difficulty in preparing a questionnaire. Having read the questionnaire, I found out that if she asks such direct and unfriendly questions, the woes of her patient will intensify.

Her questionnaire only contained slight smattering of personal values. I help her in coming up with a more effective and communicative questionnaire. I explained to her that such patients are those who seek attention and find relief if the nurse is communicative. I told her that her questionnaire should reflect personal values and be in line with the organizational values.

Organizational and personal values play a pivotal part in the development and growth of an organization. A nurse cannot perform her duties effectively if she does not have intact personal values or in case of its complete lack. Moreover, the conflict between the personal and organizational values is not a good sign.(Huberm, 2006) It is always important for an organization to infuse the organizational values to prove successful.
