The framework provided by the theory is the definition of nursing knowledge. According to Jacqueline Fawcett, nursing knowledge has five components: the conceptual framework, an empirical indicator, a metaparadigm, and philosophy. (“Jacqueline Fawcett leads nursing field in theory, education, research | SPH,” n.d.) These components form complete guiding frameworks for approaching health situations.
This theory is applicable in several areas to enhance nursing practice. For instance, education on healthier diet options for Americans reduces the risk of developing diabetes. Individuals are taught that a healthy diet has many benefits and reduce the risk of developing diabetes. A healthy diet has fruits, non-starchy vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and fiber. A diet rich in fiber slows the absorption of sugars and thus lowers blood sugar levels (Harvard School of Public Health, 2021). Fiber also interferes with the absorption of dietary fat and cholesterol and helps one eat less because foods rich in fiber make one feel full.
Additionally, individuals are also taught that poor diets are high in trans and saturated fats, components that raise the triglyceride levels in the body. A high triglyceride level predisposes one to develop type 2 diabetes. A person with an unhealthy dietary habit should thus avoid them in favor of healthier, more beneficial ones. Therefore, this information would reduce the number of patients visiting the healthcare facility for diabetes or diabetes-related complications resulting from poor diets.
This theory also facilitates research because education avails information for practice. Nurses use empirical indicators that measure the progress of their concepts. In this case, they would use the Hgb A1C test to test for diabetes (CDC, 2019). A normal range for individuals without diabetes ranges from 4% to 5.6%. A range between 5.7% and 6.4% indicates a pre-diabetic condition, hence could be managed by a healthy diet. A value that is 6.5% and high means one has diabetes and should get advised accordingly by the healthcare workers.
This theory thus advances nursing practice by guiding practitioners in ways like educating the public regarding healthy habits and reducing the development of diseases.
