Assignment Description:
1. Create a PowerPoint with the intended audience to be a community health department.
2. Focus on a real or fictional disaster that has or could affect your area. For example, if you live on the Florida coast you might choose potential hurricane.
3. Discuss the role of the Community Health Nurse in each stage of disaster. You should include a few slides on each stage of disaster: preparedness, response, recovery with specific activities and resources that the public health nurse would use in each stage.
4. Identify other agencies that might be involved.

*The assignment should be submitted in PowerPoint format, with at least 10 content slides (in addition to a title slide , conclusion slide and reference slide) and include at least two scholarly sources other than provided materials.

Disaster is an occurrence that causes social and economic damage, loss of life and disrupts health and health services to an extent that warrants emergency response from without the affected community.

Promote and protect the health populations using nursing knowledge on community health (American Public Health Association, Public Health Nursing Section, 2013).
Nurses should offer leadership, planning, policy and practice proficiency to prepare, respond, and recover.

Natural disaster
Hurricanes, Pandemics, Earthquakes, Volcanos, Floods, Tsunamis, Heat and Cold waves.
Human-made Occurrences
Fires, Terrorism, Transport and Industrial Accidents, Water Supply contamination, Structural Collapse etc.

Nurses ought understand their role in disaster preparedness and planning.
Nurses have a leadership responsibilities towards their community (Goodwin, 2013).
Nurses’ expertise and experience in primary community health care and skills in teamwork and collaboration make them ideal leaders in mitigating disaster.

A community Health Nurse is suppose to;
Ensure preparation for start of managing the community and place of work
Initiate and update a disaster plan or education program specific to the area e.g. when a national or regional pandemic is declared, community Nurses should identify high value vulnerable population like the elderly, people with underlying conditions and children. They should provide a updated record to the fire and police department for enactment of prevention measures.
Educate the Vulnerable population of the impacts of the pandemic, e.g. use of family to help teach the vulnerable members.

Review the response strategies like the availability of resources e.g. Presence of isolation centers, sample collection booth.
Organize mass drills within the community e.g. enacting wearing of masks, social distancing and quarantine
The Community Health Nurse has the obligation to assess and report on the extend to which the pandemic affects the environement.
Have an understanding of the community resources that are available and will be available after the pandemic strikes in the larger parts of the community and how the community utilize the resources together.

According to Jakeway et al (2008), Response entails the competencies needed promote life, protect property, meet human needs and protect the environment in an emergence of a pandemic attack.
Community Health Nurses are supposed to;
Utilize the public health population based algorithm to evaluate the impact of a pandemic outbreak and the required response e.g. flu or Covid
Partner with other response stakeholders and develop plans that determine direction of care for the population based on the presented symptoms. E.g. medical doctors, community leaders, law enforcement etc.

Disaster recovery is comprised of the core competencies needed to aid communities that are affected by the pandemic to recuperate effectively (Association of public Health Nurses, 2014).
Community Nurses need to conduct ongoing rapid needs assessment at a timed interval that should determine how community will recover from the pandemic. E.g. length of cessation of quarantine or isolation.

Community Health Nurses coordinated with community stakeholders to plan for long terms health concerns. They include, the Ministry of health, legislators and private sector.
They should help the community in finding a new normal after the pandemic e.g. holding counseling sessions for families who lost members to the pandemic.
Nurses conduct evaluation on the long-terms effects of the pandemic to the community in order to promote public health services e.g. struggles people face when accessing health services, the effects of vaccines administered.
