Discussion- “What is the Purpose of Nursing?” Findings
Five nurses and five laypersons were asked what the purpose of nursing was in an exact way and they gave different answers. A contextual analysis found that the major idea about the purpose of nursing was that nursing is a service directed towards patients, whether terminally ill or just ill (USC, 2022). Other descriptions find nursing purpose as a guide to patients that are ill, bridge patients’ needs to the doctors, advocate for patients’ needs, and educate the public about relevant health matters. Most nurses identified patients at the center of their work and described everything in relation to the outcome of the patient. One nurse in particular perceived nursing as a wedge between doctors and patients.
Similarly, the laypersons also identified nursing as individuals that are responsible for providing care to patients in any setting, clinical or outpatient Bhandari, 2022). They perceive nursing as a job to save lives and monitor those in hospitals. Nurses work in clinical settings based on standard guidelines. One layperson particularly identified nursing as a role to provide care, and compassion and educate patients in need.
There were no great differences in the essence of descriptions, only diverse ways of explanations the question. The overall description of the purpose of nursing according to all the respondents was to provide professional care to patients, support those going through tough medical times, educate patients and families, carry out medical orders given by doctors, advocate for patients’ needs, and work within the designated guidelines when providing care to patients. In essence, nursing is a professional service directed towards patient care and saving lives.
