Discussion Question- System Change
System change can be defined as an alteration or modification of strategies, practices, power crescendos, social beliefs, or mindsets underlying an issue in the society. System change begins from a local level all the way to the global level. Katie Boston-Leary, a nurse leader who implemented the C-suite concept, is an excellent example of how a nurse leader can successfully lead change in an organization (Thew, 2018). The C-suite is a group of top management that includes the CEO, CFO, COO, CIO, and CNO (Bloomenthal, 2020). Since nurses are transformation agents, Boston-Leary recognizes the significance of nursing to the whole company. Hospital and clinic-level nurses spend more time with patients than every health care staff, said Boston-Leary (Thew, 2020). As a nurse leader, you need to influence choices at the top level, since in many businesses, nursing is the most important resource. Both of these roles are well-suited to nurse leaders.
Boston- Leary’s decision to make the alterations was influenced by a number of factors. She recognized that nurses caring for patients were unable to advocate for themselves because of the huge number of patients and acute psychiatric levels. She discovered that most health care managers still use the patient census approach to estimate staffing needs. In order to keep experienced and high-quality nurses in health care facilities and hospitals, this policy is out of step with the times. A contributing factor was the high attrition and poor retention of pediatric floor nurses (Thew, 2020). For this reason, the patients were receiving subpar medical treatment. However, it was not easy for Boston-Leary to get her hands on this new policy. Boston-Leary had to find a solution to fill the void caused by a poor nurse retention rate. The pediatric unit of Boston- Leary’s hospital was understaffed, so the hospital’s administrator, Boston-Leary, sought help from another renowned institution to fill the gap (Thew, 2020). Better results for patients and nurses resulted in a rise in reimbursements due to better patient outcomes. Nursing leaders must think outside the box when it comes to implementing reform. A position in the C-suite will give nurses a platform to express their concerns. Nurses, like patients, want an advocate who will stand up for their interests so that they may focus on what they do best: providing the highest level of care to their patients.
